We\u00a0provide the context for students to understand the relevance and role of bioscience in our in society as students consider and discuss the ethics of genetic research and the impact it has on our lives. The workshop uses current headlines and case studies coupled with hands-on\u00a0activities to explain, investigate and debate modern genetic concepts and evaluate the associated costs and benefits. With a mixture of presentations and hands-on activities we introduce students to the route from molecule to medicine &#8211; from discovery, through development, to clinical trials. Students form their own pharmaceutical company and take on roles such as CEO, Director of Research and Marketing Manager. They select a therapeutic disease area to focus on, and respond to \u2018breaking data\u2019 to identify the protein that they wish to target with a new medicine. They \u2018screen\u2019 compounds to identify potential drugs and ultimately take a compound through the drug development pipeline and into clinical trials. With a mixture of presentations, fascinating facts and hands-on activities we take students step-by step through the route from molecule to medicine. Students work in teams to form their own pharmaceutical company. They research and select a disease to cure, then become bioscientists to \u2018screen\u2019 compounds to identify potential drugs. They take on roles of toxicologists to eliminate those compounds that may have serious side effects, and ultimately use pre-clinical data to choose a single compound to trial in patients. This hands-on workshop lets students assemble their own pizzas, adding toppings to represent the organelles of an animal cell as we discuss the appearance and role of each one in turn. \u00a0While the pizzas are baking, learning is further reinforced when the students label a photograph of their pizza.
